4-letter idioms, or cheng yu, is a core part of understanding Chinese culture that runs much deeper than just the language. They offer a look into stories and traditions passed from generations, all compressed into 4 neat characters. Sometimes 8 characters, also called a “top-down cheng yu”.
In calling upon a single cheng yu, you can invoke deep feelings, better understand the philosophy of our Chinese ancestors, brutally insult someone, or get a better grade on your essay.
